At Fresh Flower Scent we have a team of florists who find inspiration not only in the flowers we love, but also in the history and diversity of our district, Islington. Despite being part of the sprawling Metropolis of London, there is a little know, and somewhat unexpected, historical connection between the natural world and the beauty to be found in nature and the place we call home. We want to share some of that history, and some of our inspirations, to show why we believe we are the florists capable of providing bouquets and flowers for any occasion.
Islington is a district of greater London and part of the London Borough of Islington. The borough has a population of close to 250,000 and is a mainly residential area, but as we shall see there are some hidden natural gems and green spaces waiting to be discovered. The area began as a sprawling village in the county of Middlesex, and the hill upon which the village was built has long supplied the City of London with water. However, by the 17th century the traditional sources were inadequate to supply the growing population with fresh water so plans were made to construct the New River to bring fresh water from the source of the River Lea in Hertfordshire to New River Head. The river was opened in 1613 by Sir Hugh Myddleton, who constructed the project. The availability of water in the 17th and 18th centuries made Islington the perfect place for growing flowers, fruit and vegetable, leading to the founding of numerous market gardens, which in turn attracted many London day trippers who were attracted by the areas rural feel.
Given its status as a desirable residential location, there is a shortage of large parks and open spaces Islington however that does not mean that the area is without any such areas to provide some peace, tranquillity and respite from the concrete jungle of London. The largest continuous open space in the district is the 29 acre Highbury Fields. In addition to having some parkland habitat, Highbury Fields also provides recreational areas and is a popular thoroughfare for people visiting the nearby Emirate Stadium. The borough is also home to three local nature reserves.
Gillespie Park is a 3.4 hectare local nature reserve and also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. It is also home to the Islington Ecology Centre. The site includes meadow and woodland areas with a number of ponds and reed beds, and provides a habitat for numerous plants, birds and butterflies. A number of flowers such as narrow-leaved trefoil and pyramidal orchid are particularly rare in Central London. The park was also the site of the first recorded breeding of the long-tailed blue butterfly. Wherever you find breeding butterflies it is sure that you will also find curious florists looking for inspiration.
The smallest local nature reserve in London can also be found on our doorstep, the 0.35 Hectare Barnsbury Wood. This is a site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation and was the garden of the vicarage of St. Andrew’s church in the 19th century. The garden was abandoned in the early 20th century and became the woodland it is today. We often wonder what florists like ourselves could do with such an intimate space.
Parkland Walk is the final nature reserve in the locality, and the tree found there today have grown in the last 50 years. More than 300 species of wild flowers have been found here , ranging from the common to the exotic. With such diversity is it any wonder our florists find inspiration here?
The florists at Fresh Flower Scent have the passion and skill to provide bouquets for any occasion, and we are waiting to fulfil your floral desires.
